Private James McCullough

The background of this man is not known at present.

James McCullough enlisted at Belfast in the 36th (Ulster) Division's Cyclist Company on 18 January 1915 (No.1702). He gave his age as 19, his occupation as milk vendor, and his place of birth as Newtownbreda, County Down.

Between 2 and 25 August 1915 he transferred to the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons Service Squadron (No. UD/274). The squadron, which had been formed as divisional cavalry for the 36th (Ulster) Division, embarked for France on 6 October 1915. A party of at least thirty men of the squadron, including McCullough, had embarked three days earlier, attached to 36th Division Headquarters, many if not all of them serving as batmen to senior officers.

The Inniskilling squadron war diary of 10 January 1916 reported that:

Ptes McKeown & McCullagh [sic] will proceed to the Base.

Soon after, McCullough was returned to the UK where, on 3 February 1916, he was discharged, being underage (paragraph 392(vi), King's Regulations).
